Math
10-15 min.
Math homework is now online! We are using Zearn.org for students regular math homework, though occasionally I might also send homework from class to complete.
To complete their work, students will log into Zearn and work on their assignments for 10-15 min.
Reading
20-25 min.
Reading homework is for students to read 20-30 minutes each week day.
Students should write down the title of what they read and jot about their reading in their reading logs. Agendas should be signed daily.
Homework can be a good way to reinforce skills and build positive study habits, but research shows that after a certain amount of time it simply loses any value. The National Education Association recommends that third graders spend about 30 minutes each night on homework.
The goal of math homework is for students to practice their math skills independently. It is okay if they run into problems that they can't solve. There are helpful suggestions and videos on the site, but if they only get two problems done in their 15 min. of math homework then that's fine. When I check student reports I will be able to see where students are struggling, and we can focus in on those areas in class.
The goal of reading homework is for students to read. If they like reading sports magazines then they should read them. If they love reading novels then that is fantastic. If they want to read something online that is fine as well. Getting into the habit of reading regularly will be incredibly helpful to them throughout their lives - and the more they read, the more vocabulary and background knowledge they will build.
