Reading

In reading this week we have wrapped up our unit on studying characters. Students have learned how to look at stories as following the same type of pattern and use what they know to determine the theme, or lesson, of fiction stories. In addition, we have done an immense amount of work on comparing and contrasting characters, conflicts, and themes across multiple books. Next week we will dive into our next nonfiction unit on research!

Writing

In writing, we also brought our unit on opinion writing to a close with students working to complete their final drafts of their literary essays. Using what we have learned about how stories go, students analyzed a text to write about either a character or the theme. Next week, students will switch gears to match our reading unit and begin our new work on research writing.

Math

In math this week we made the leap from thinking about fractions in terms of blocks to thinking about them as parts of a number line.

Next, we have moved from just looking at fractions that are less than one whole, to looking at fractions on a number line that are greater than one whole.

Have a great weekend!
