Reading
In reading this week we have been continuing our work in non fiction texts. Students have been working not just to record facts, but also to grow their own ideas about a topic as they research by asking questions and searching for answers.
We have also begun looking at how authors structure their texts in order to better understand them. Specifically, we studied how authors organize information into main idea and detail texts or by organizing details into a sequence of events.
Writing
In writing, we've been looking at classic fairy tales like Cinderella, Red Riding Hood, and Billy Goats Gruff to understand how these stories normally go. Then, our class studied how some authors adapt these stories by making changes to characters, motivations, and settings before students set off to make changes of their own. Finally, we worked to plan out our fairy tale adaptations using what we know about story elements.
Math
In math, we are heading towards the end of our fraction module. This week, we have been working towards understanding fractions larger than one whole, how to represent wholes as fractions, and how to relate fractions to various number lines.
Integrated Studies
Finally, in integrated studies we have been working through the regions of North Carolina: The coastal plains, the piedmont, and the mountains. In our study of each region, we have watched videos and closely read texts to understand how people's lives are affected by each of these unique areas.
