Unit 1: Building Good Reading Habits (September)

In this unit, we work to build good reading habits and encourage a love of reading that will carry kids through their first-grade year.  We also begin focusing on building stamina, tackling hard words and talking about our reading lives with friends.

What your kids should be doing:

  • Reading books and texts that they are excited about!

  • Finding good quiet places where they can focus

  • Looking for "just right" books that are not too hard or too easy

  • Pausing after a section or chapter to check their comprehension

  • Stopping to tackle hard words and think about what they mean instead of skipping over them

Unit 2:  Word Detective (October-Early November)

In this Unit, students will begin the challenge of becoming Word Detectives!  We will focus on noticing when we do not know a word and strategies to solve words.  This unit is designed to give students the tools they need to tackle difficult words and the confidence to never give up.

What your kids should be doing:

  • Stop when they come to a word they do not know and try something.

  • Look closely at the word to solve it.

  • Break the word into parts.

  • NEVER give up on a word.

  • Check to make sure the word looks right and sounds right in the sentence.

  • IXL- practice math problems online

  • MathGames - build up your fluency with engaging math games

Modules: (Sept.-Oct.)

Module 1:  In this first module of Grade 1, students make significant progress towards fluency with addition and subtraction of numbers to 10 (1.OA.6) as they are presented with opportunities intended to advance them from counting all to counting on, which leads many students then to decomposing and composing addends and total amounts. In Kindergarten, students achieved fluency with addition and subtraction facts to 5. This means they can decompose 5 into 4 and 1, 3 and 2, and 5 and 0. They can do this without counting all. They perceive the 3 and 2 embedded within the 5.
